Las Vegas and Death Valley

#Route66 #part4 Hi guys! This last week was super busy, so forgive me my delayed post. Now, it’s about time to continue our Route 66 adventure, and I hope all of you come with me on today’s trip through Arizona, Utah, Nevada and California. If you’ve followed the blog, you know that our last stop was a wonder of nature: the amazing Grand Canyon. Yes, I have to admit, I immediately fell in love. It was definitely a place I would have liked to spend more time at, but at some point we had to leave for a new destination. Crossing the border to Utah several times, we ended up approaching an ocean of lights covering the horizon in front of us: Las Vegas, Nevada.
In contrast to the natural beauty of the National Park we just came from, this artificial illumination seemed so odd and – at least for me – not very attractive. Shortly after, we were already inside of this constantly moving, never sleeping, illuminated city. Vegas definitely lived up to its reputation: a city known primarily for its gambling, entertainment and nightlife. People of all kinds were sitting in front of colorful gambling machines from morning till night with big, glassy eyes. Others could be found in countless clubs and bars. We also encountered a ‘Just-Married couple’ lifting a couple of beers on their new relationship status in the same bar, where our crew also celebrated some good news (I will give them away very soon in another post!!).

Vegas by day, however, made a totally different impression on me. Enjoying the time without driving, the five of us spent the day strolling through the city in the sunshine, looking at every building with amazement. What astonished me most: In Las Vegas, you can find fake Venice, fake Rome, fake Paris, and who knows what more. Everything seems to be a construction that copies another place. But I have to admit that it was impressive to walk along the canals in ‘Venice’ and to stand underneath the ‘Eiffel tower’ in one day. ☺

After spending two nights in Las Vegas and taking the whole gambling-nightlife experience in, I was happy to leave and set off towards a place that was a whole lot more attractive to me than Vegas: a desert. #hahaha #shekidding? We’re in California by now, and our first stop was Death Valley – the hottest, driest, and lowest National Park. In this below-sea-level basin, steady drought and record summer heat make Death Valley a land of extremes. And let me tell you: that desert is everything but boring! I’ve never seen so many different colors, structures, and textures in a place where there supposedly is nothing! The Badlands, the Golden Canyon, or the Badwater Basin (vast salt flats at the lowest elevation in North America) presented themselves from the best side while we were cruising around them in the desert sun. Oh, and not to forget our dinner in the middle of the desert in Badwater Saloon!
Who would have guessed, that a few hours ago we were taking a walk underneath palm trees and watched gondolas from the Rialto Bridge…
At this point I say goodbye once again, but I promise you to see you back in…Los Angeles! Be grateful and be kind, K. To be continued…
